Paediatric Echocardiogram

Understanding the Paediatric Echocardiogram

Our paediatric echocardiogram is tailor-made for kids of all ages from neonates through to 15 year olds.

What is a Paediatric Echocardiogram?

A paediatric echocardiogram is a specialised ultrasound of the developing heart (children under the age of 16). For the most part, it resembles an adult transthoracic echocardiogram. There is however, a need for further in-depth evaluation of imaging views that are of less significance when compared to an adult echocardiogram. For this reason, we use a high-frequency probe specifically designed for looking at smaller hearts through smaller chest walls. With the added difficulty of interpreting a paediatric echocardiogram in a patient with complex pathology there is significant importance on the sonographer having the appropriate experience and a Paediatric Cardiologist reporting and interpreting the ultrasound images.

All Paediatric Echocardiograms are reviewed and reported by specialist paediatric cardiologist Dr Jascha Kehr.

The Unique Nature of a Paediatric Echo

In order to perform echoes on neonates and young kids our paediatric sonographer has a strong understanding of congenital and acquired heart disease in childhood and spends a lot of time performing paediatric echocardiography and getting exposure to a wide range of pathologies.
